Lists of Helpful Things to Keep Around...
Pantry, Bulk Items:
-Canned beans: chickpeas, black beans, white (cannelini beans), etc.
-Brown rice
-Pearled barley
-Lentils--red, brown, and/or French
-Dried Polenta/Coarse cornmeal
-Steel-cut or "Quick Cooking" Oats (not "Instant Oats," which are so processed they have virtually no flavor and fall apart)
Pantry, Other:
-Italian-style seasoned, panko, or whole wheat breadcrumbs
-Tomato sauce (the little cans), crushed tomatoes (the Muir Glen fire-roasted are Kristy's favorite) and tomato paste (which comes in practical toothpaste-like tubes you can keep in the fridge)
-Whole wheat pasta, and/or other interesting pastas like spinach linguine, which is wheat pasta with added dried spinach, or quinoa rotelle, which is made from quinoa and corn
-White wine (Emily loves the little 187 ml 4-packs - perfect for risottos)
-A few jars of fun things like oil-packed sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, hearts of palm
-Olive oil and canola oil
-DIJON mustard--Kristy finds some way to use this every single day. Find a brand you like, my favorites are Maille from France for fancy flavored mustards and Grey Poupon original dijon for everyday use. Cook's Illustrated also favored Grey Poupon in their evaluation of various dijon varieties.
Produce/Other:
-Onions--Some kind of onion should always be around--Spanish yellow, red, green, shallots, etc.
-Garlic
-Cheese--Emily's favorite is Parmesan; Kristy loves Feta and Goat cheese (which are lower in fat and calories than other cheeses), Pecorino, smoked Gouda
-Potatoes
